Fall GRE workshop to be held at MSU-Meridian
MERIDIAN, Miss.—A daylong workshop on the Graduate Record Examination, known as the GRE, will be held Saturday [Oct 15] at Mississippi State University-Meridian.
Taking place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in Room 008 on the College Park campus, the workshop is sponsored by the campus Psychology Club.
October 12 is the registration deadline, with a registration fee of $45 for MSU students and $65 for all others. The fee covers a study guide and related workshop materials, as well as lunch.
For more information or to register, contact the Division of Arts and Sciences at 601-484-0140 or rgough@meridian.msstate.edu.
The GRE is used by many higher education graduate programs for admission purposes, as well as determining grant fellowships or financial aid.
Rodney Wilson said the workshop is designed to familiarize students with the exam’s three major domains and share test-taking strategies.
Wilson, an assistant professor of psychology at MSU-Meridian, is the workshop’s coordinator.
“As with any standardized test of this magnitude, stress management plays an important role,” he said. “Understanding overall test organization, scoring, and day of testing procedures serves to help reduce stress and aid students in performing to the best of their ability.”
Emily McMillan, a Meridian resident who earned her undergraduate degree in business at MSU-Meridian and attended the GRE workshop this past April, said the workshop was a good refresher since it had been a few years since she had graduated.
Workshop presenter Lin Ge will cover the quantitative portion, while James Kelley will lead discussions on the verbal and writing portions. Ge is an assistant professor of math/statistics; Kelley, an associate professor of English.
“It helped me have a better understanding on how the test would flow and gave me a good overview of the material that would be covered,” added McMillan. “It was definitely worthwhile, and I would recommend the workshop to anyone preparing to take the exam.”
In Mississippi, the GRE is given year-round at MSU’s Starkville campus and other testing centers around the state.
