Elementary Education
The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree prepares students for teacher certification in elementary grades through coursework and experiences that focus on foundations of education, subject matter knowledge, best practices, and clinical experiences.
The following licensure options are available to elementary teacher candidates:
OPTION 1: Students may choose the early childhood (PreK-3) concentration. The early childhood concentration leads to K-3 interdisciplinary certification with a PreK endorsement. Students with this concentration can choose to take three additional courses to extend the interdisciplinary certification through 6th grade.
OPTION 2: Students may also choose the middle school (K-8) concentration with two areas of endorsement. The middle school concentration leads to K-6 interdisciplinary certification with 7th-8th grade subject area endorsement. Teacher candidates select two subject areas for endorsement including English language arts, social studies, math, or science.
OPTION 3: Students may choose the middle school (K-8) concentration with K-8 endorsement in special education and one additional subject area. Teacher candidates select one subject area for endorsement including English language arts, social studies, math, or science.
The elementary education curriculum culminates in the teaching internship, a semester-long field experience in a public school setting.
Professional Advancement Network for Teacher Assistants (PANTA)
Are you a teacher assistant who wants to become a licensed teacher? PANTA participants complete one of the three options above leading to elementary certification. The coursework is offered in a blended format of live face-to-face, live online, and asynchronous online to meet the needs of working professionals. Teacher candidates participating in this initiative complete most of their field experiences in the classroom where they are employed.
