Community College Education

The goal of the Community College Education Program at Mississippi State University is to provide a high quality and interactive graduate education for working higher education professionals that is befitting of a land-grant research university. We intend to provide an innovative, interactive learning experience, which can be effectively pursued by those who are working full-time at community colleges and universities across the country.

This program furthers the pursuit of such a wide range of career ambitions by providing multiple tracks that move the student toward different career goals. Each student will receive a 12-hour core education that prepares them to thrive while working at a college or university. Students will also receive an 18-hour credentialing field education that prepares them to both work in a staff role at a college or university and to be credentialed as a faculty member.

Program Location and Availability

All tracks of the program have live, synchronous online core of four graduate courses in the teaching & learning, assessment, research, and the history and philosophy of higher education. Each course is taught from the perspective of access-oriented public institutions of higher education. These are all taught during the evening on weekdays to support the full-time careers of students. Each class meeting will be available through Webex and the classes will be archived for future use by students who cannot meet at the scheduled time. This is also done to support the work schedule of students. The required courses that are common to all program students are:

Credentialing Field Courses

The credentialing field for each student will be an 18-hour graduate minor that both prepares for a faculty role and for field relevant staff roles. Click on a field label for specific course, prerequisite, and scheduling information about that field. The available fields are:

The credentialing field of Biology is available to students through the completion of the General Biology Certificate offered by the Biology Department of the College of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State University. The courses are all offered in an asynchronous online format for maximum schedule and location flexibility. A student completing this course of study will be prepared to be credentialed as a college faculty member. Depending on local licensing requirements and the background of the student, this credentialing may also allow for credentialing to teach dual-credit high school courses in Biology.

The Communication Credentialing Field is provided by the Communication Department of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department provides a wide-range of regularly offered evening graduate courses that would be appropriate for a community college education credentialing field. The department also offers a limited number of asynchronous online courses that are less frequently scheduled. Consequently, the course and schedule options for distance students are more limited than for the on-ground students. Students can begin the communication credentialing courses without specific prerequisite courses. The following courses are periodically offered that would fit the Communication Credentialing Field.

The Data Science credentialing field courses are offered by the Data Science Academic Institute. It comes in the form of a professional certificate in data science pedagogy. A student completing this course of study will be prepared to be credentialed as a college faculty member in data science and to perform data science functions throughout a college or university.

Core courses for the data science professional certificate are regularly offered in an asynchronous online format.  They include:

The English Credentialing Field is provided by the English Department of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department provides a wide range of regularly evening graduate courses that would be appropriate for a community college education credentialing field. These courses are available at the Starkville campus of Mississippi State University and are very conveniently scheduled for the working professional student. A limited number of graduate history courses are also available at the Meridian Campus and in the asynchronous online format. However, only the Starkville Campus offers enough appropriate courses to effectively provide a credentialing field in English. Consequently, the English Credentialing Field for is only recommended for students who are located within driving distance of the Starkville Campus. Students can begin the credentialing courses without specific prerequisites.

The Geoscience credentialing field courses are offered by the nationally recognized geoscience department of the College of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State. It comes in the form of a professional certificate in spanning the fields of geography and geology. A student completing this course of study will be prepared to be credentialed as a college faculty member in geosciences and to work in academic leadership roles throughout a college or university.

The History Credentialing Field is provided by the History Department of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department provides a wide-range of regularly evening graduate courses that would be appropriate for a community college education credentialing field. These courses are available at the Meridian campus of Mississippi State University and are very convenient for the working professional student. A limited number of graduate history courses are also available in the asynchronous online format. The course availability, schedule, and sequence at the Starkville Campus does not currently support the History Credentialing Field for working professionals is not recommended for on-ground students at the Starkville Campus. Students can begin the history credentialing courses without specific prerequisites. The Psychology Credentialing Field is provided by the Psychology Department of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department provides a wide range of regularly offered daytime on-ground graduate courses, but evening courses are only regularly offered at the Meridian Campus. Online courses are limited. Consequently, this credentialing field is only viable for working students near the Meridian Campus. Students can begin the psychology credentialing courses without specific prerequisite courses.

The Public Administration Credentialing Field prepares students to take on administrative roles at public or governmental entities. Among these roles are budgeting, government interaction, personnel management, legal issues, assessment, and public administration research. This includes colleges and universities. With this credentialing field, the program also allows the graduates to be credentialed to teach courses in the field of public administration. Mississippi State’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration offers an abundance of courses that can be used to form an effective 18-hour credentialing block for Public Administration. These courses are all offered in an evening, synchronous online format to make them readily accessible to working professionals. The courses are also offered in an on-campus format with variable schedules.  Students much choose between the on-ground or synchronous online format and cannot easily move between formats. These credentialing field courses, and related advising are provided by different academic departments. Consequently, course delivery and availability vary by field. Some fields are regularly fully available from a distance outside of normal working hours and do not require any on-campus participation. This includes full distance availability of library, advising, counseling, and information technology services. Others are largely campus-centered with some combination of evening or asynchronous online courses, but are not recommended for students who are more than a comfortable driving distance from either Starkville or Meridian Mississippi.

Application Procedure

To begin the process, applicants will fill out an application with the MSU Graduate School. They will also need to provide three recommendations, a written Statement of Purpose, an undergraduate transcript, and any relevant graduate transcripts. The GRE is optional, but not required. The dates for when the application must be in are as follows:
